The Story Behind Grezz

Grezz is a tribute to the winemaker’s grandmother, a woman he never had the chance to meet but whose passion for her small field in Dingli left a lasting legacy. She dedicated herself to cultivating vegetables with care and devotion, and her love for the land inspired those who followed.


In 2005, the winemaker planted his first experimental vineyard in her field. It was there, working the soil, that his passion for grape growing and winemaking was born. This experience gave him a profound appreciation for the challenges of cultivating quality grapes and a deep respect for the farmers who dedicate their lives to this craft.


Naming the first wine from this field after Grezz was a heartfelt choice—a way to honor her courage, strength, and connection to the land. Today, Grezz stands as a benchmark wine, reflecting both the winemaker’s journey and his grandmother’s enduring spirit.

Grezz is a bold and structured wine, primarily crafted from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with occasional small additions of other varieties depending on the vintage. Fermented in stainless steel vats to maintain precise temperature control, it undergoes extended maceration to enhance structure and develop rich tannins, ensuring both aging potential and a polished profile.


Aged exclusively in new French oak, Grezz achieves a voluminous mouthfeel, layered complexity, and a lingering finish. With its deep connection to earthy flavors and meticulous craftsmanship, this wine exemplifies the winemaker’s dedication to creating a refined, age-worthy style.

Planted Between 2000-2004 on Calcareous Soil and Terra Rossa

METHOD AND PRODUCTION

Crafted through three separate harvests at optimum ripeness to achieve high structure and alcohol. Cabernet Sauvignon underwent extended maceration to enhance complexity. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels for approximately 24 months to add depth and elegance.

Alcohol: 14% ABV

APPEARANCE, NOSE & PALATE


Appearance: Medium intensity garnet color, reflecting signs of aging and maturity.


Nose: Pronounced intensity with developing aromas. Primary notes of black fruits like blackcurrants, cassis, ribena, and plums are complemented by tomato leaf, grass, herbal garrigue, mint, and eucalyptus, alongside wet stone minerality. Secondary aromas of smoky wood, oak, vanilla, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, cedar, and buttery cheese notes from malolactic fermentation (MLF) add complexity. Tertiary notes from bottle aging reveal caramel, cooked blackcurrants, leather, mushroom, forest floor, tobacco, cigar box, meat, game, and savory umami nuances.


Palate: Dry with high acidity and robust tannins. A full-bodied structure with high alcohol and pronounced intensity delivers a bold, layered profile. Flavors mirror the nose, with a long, lingering meaty finish that showcases depth and refinement.

This 2019 vintage highlights the bold characteristics of Merlot and the structural intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted without Cabernet Franc, the wine still showcases exceptional longevity, balance, and elegance. Representing Malta’s sun-drenched soils, it reflects the winemaker’s vision of a rich and expressive red wine.

Nose: Pronounced intensity with developing aromas. Primary notes of black fruits such as blackcurrants, cassis, ribena, plums, and black cherry are complemented by tomato leaf, grass, herbal garrigue, mint, and eucalyptus, alongside wet stone minerality. Secondary aromas reveal smoky wood, oak, vanilla, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, cedar, and buttery cheese notes from malolactic fermentation (MLF). Tertiary characteristics from bottle aging include caramel, coffee, toffee, dark chocolate, cooked blackcurrants, leather, mushroom, forest floor, tobacco, cigar box, meat, game, savory umami, and farmyard nuances.


Palate: Dry with high acidity and robust tannins. A full-bodied structure with high alcohol and pronounced intensity delivers a bold and multi-layered profile. Flavors reflect the nose, with a long, lingering finish of meaty and earthy terroir-driven notes.

METHOD AND PRODUCTION

Crafted through three separate harvests at optimum ripeness to achieve high structure and alcohol. Extended maceration was applied mainly for Cabernet Sauvignon to enhance its complexity. Aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels. Due to challenges with Merlot in 2017, only 20% of the usual vineyard was used, and exceptional Syrah was incorporated to balance the blend.

Nose: Pronounced intensity with developing aromas. WINEMAKER’S NOTES


The 2017 vintage presented challenges for Merlot due to mold, resulting in 80% of the usual vineyard being rejected. To compensate, Syrah—exceptional this year—was added to create a balanced and robust blend. This vintage stands out for its depth and adaptability, highlighting the winemaker’s dedication to crafting an expressive and high-quality wine.
